We are reading!

Since around Calvin's birthday, he has been very interested in letters and trying figure them out. So the main focus of our school time has been working with flashcards to be able to recognize the letters and the sounds that they make.
That then progressed to putting letters together to make words
and learning some of the different rules.
(In my opinion, Spanish is so much easier. What you see is what you get!)
Calvin does a really good job at being able to apply the same rule to multiple words.
Some of the very first words that Calvin figured out by himself, without any prompting, were "yes" and "zoo" from a magnet on the fridge and "salsa" from a jar on the counter.

Below is the very first book Calvin recently learned to read all by himself.
We even read the back. So here is a sampling. With just a little help,
he was able to figure out all of the words.
"Can a big bear find a hat that is not too small and not too big...but just right?
This small book is just right for you to read and find out for yourself!"

The whole process of learning how to read kind of leaves you in awe. It's amazing how our minds work, and it's humbling to be taken back to the beginning stages of learning.
